Journals you can make in a snap!

Picture
Hey guys!  Welcome to the studio.  I'm Tee and I'll be sharing something soooo easy and fun with you today!

I decided to do this workshop because I'm participating in the Sketchbook Project this year and just received my totally disappointing book.  It's got flimsy paper and is held together with..... *shudder* staples!  I kid you not.... I talked to Maisy and told her that the staples offend my bookbinder's sensibilities!  So we decided that maybe I should do a little workshop on how to rebind the books.  Then after I filmed the videos I thought.. well that would make for fun books for people to give as gifts.. hmmmmmm..  So Snappy Li'l Journals  were born.

The covers are plain, so that you can paint, cover or doodle it to make it your own.

You should find everything you need on this page to begin making your own snappy li'l journals!  If you have any questions, I have a contact form set up at the bottom of the page.  There's also a place to submit images of your projects just under the supply list.

This class is open to you for always.  You are forever welcome here.

Sharing your project!

If you give me permission, I may share your projects with others on this website, on my blog and possibly on social media sites.

If you'd rather not have me show it to others but would still like me to see it, just leave the permission box blank

 Let's Get Started!

I'll be showing you have to create these books from scratch.

If you are rebinding your Sketchbook Project book, you can practice on other materials or go straight for the rebind.

Cutting info for my demo projects
From Chipboard
Covers:  7 x 10 inches  (17.8 x 25.4 cm)

From Paper - Canson Mixed Media
Pages:  7 x 10 inches (17.8 x 25.4 cm)
Here are Tee's tips for cutting materials for this book
  • Sometimes it's the covering materials that determine the size of my books (is the chipboard large enough or is the paper large enough to cover it, etc.).
  • Sometimes it's the size of the paper you want to make the pages out of that determines the size to make the covers.
  • Cut the covers first.
  • Cut pages to the same height as the cover.  This is really important in an art journal that you want to stand up for drying.
  • Cut 5 to 10 pages for each signature. (a signature is a set of folded pages) Fewer for thick paper and more for thin paper.

To Rebind the Sketchbook Project Book
Gently open the staples inside the book and remove them
If you are a sketcher and don't intend to use wet media.. you can go immediately to Stitching in Pages - Single Signature
If you are using wet media... I highly recommend you cut new paper for your book.  You have two choices:

1.  Use five or so pages of heavier paper (watercolor paper is recommended) and stitch them into the cover.  If that's for you then go to:
  • Preparing Pages
  • Stitching in Pages - Single Signature

2.  Use more pages divided into multiple signatures and alter the cover so that it can hold them.  If this works better for you then go to:
  • Preparing Pages
  • Expanding the Cover
  • Stitching in Pages - Multiple Signatures

Making the Covers

You don't have to be a square

You'll need to stick with a rectangle for the Sketchbook Project - but why not make some for fun and gifts too?  The only limits here are your imagination!  Any shape that you can fold in half can be used to create these book!  Your book can take on a whole new shape...

Preparing Pages

Remember if you don't have a piercing tool, you can use a push pin~

Finishing Ideas (Requested by you guys... I hear you!)
  • You can decorate the cover as if it were a journal page
  • Print some of your art that you already completed and adhere it to the cover
  • Try collage, painting, image transfer, doodles, zentangle or any of your favorite background techniques
  • Cover it with decorative paper
  • Try fabric to cover the chipboard

That's all well and good Tee, but what if I want more pages?

I'm so glad you asked.  This next section uses the same stitching technique (called the pamphlet stitch) to put in three signatures.  You can put in as many as you want!

Frequently Asked Questions
Thread - What thread are you using to stitch the books together?
  • I am using embroidery floss in the videos.  I also use waxed linen thread, ribbon, dental floss, craft floss, leather cord, satin cord or whatever I have on hand.
